Understanding your results

Sleep tests measure how often your breathing stops or becomes shallow each hour. This is reported as the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). In adults, sleep apnea severity is generally described as:

AHI (events per hour)SeverityTypical options
Fewer than 5NormalSnoring treatment if needed
5 to 14MildOral appliance therapy, lifestyle changes
15 to 29ModerateOral appliance therapy or CPAP
30 or moreSevereCPAP is usually recommended. Some patients use an oral appliance together with CPAP

Dr. Lester reviews your results with you and recommends the treatment that fits your diagnosis, your health and your lifestyle. If an oral appliance is not the right choice, she will tell you and help coordinate care with your physician.

From test to treatment

What happens next

Once your sleep apnea is confirmed and an oral appliance is the right choice, the rest of the process is simple.

Already had a sleep study? Bring a copy of your most recent report to your consultation. Depending on when it was done, it may be all we need to get started.

  1. Sleep consultation

Dr. Lester reviews your symptoms, sleep habits and health history, and examines your jaw, bite, teeth and airway to see whether an oral appliance may be a good fit.

  2. Sleep test

A sleep test is the only way to confirm sleep apnea and how severe it is. Choose the option that works best for you:

At homeOur Rest Assured home sleep testing service lets you test in your own bed.
In personWe can schedule an overnight study at one of our preferred sleep testing centers.
  3. Results reviewed with you

Your test results are sent to Dr. Lester, who walks you through what they mean. If your sleep apnea is severe or an appliance is not the right fit, she will tell you and help coordinate care with your physician.

  4. Custom fitting

We take precise impressions of your teeth and have your appliance made for your mouth. At a later visit it is fitted, and you learn how to wear and care for it.

  5. Fine-tune and confirm

Follow-up visits adjust your jaw position for comfort and results. A follow-up sleep test while wearing the device may be recommended to confirm it is working.
